Santa Cruz field trip

Posted by: Peter at 8:46 am on Wednesday, October 4, 2006

Posted by Glenn Nelson:

On Tuesday, 31 October, one of the activities planned is a field trip to my home town, Santa Cruz. We are located on the north side of Monterey Bay, and Monterey is on the south side. Winds are reliable between 2 to 4 PM.

I describe here some of the possible KAP locations. And here is a link to a Flickr map for these sites.
If you want to see all of my Flickr KAP, use this link instead.

The most likely destination is the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk - a very old-style amusement park, with wooden roller coaster and more. The rides will be closed and there will be very few people at the beach.

Less than a mile west is the Santa Cruz Lighthouse (and surfing museum), and world famous surfing location, Steamers Lane.

Less than a mile east is the Santa Cruz Yacht Harbor, home to numerous sailboats.

In addition, there are beautiful beaches and the charming, Mediterranean-style Village of Capitola.

Only 50 days to go

autoKAP competition

Posted by: James at 8:20 pm on Friday, August 11, 2006

We invite entries to the first ever autoKAP photographic competition, sponsored by Gentles Limited. In the last couple of years more and more KAPers have been using the power of large memory cards and lightweight cameras to re-define what KAP is, this is your chance to show your results!

The entries will be displayed on the web and at KAPiCA/06, with the judging and winners announced on November 2nd at KAPiCA/06. There will be prizes (provided by Gentles Limited, home of gentLED) for the winning submissions, including signed copies of the newly published “Hanging by a Thread” by Craig Wilson.

You don’t need to be with us at KAPiCA/06 to enter, all submissions are welcome!

Deadline for Submissions is the 6th October 2006.

Full up — waiting list only

Posted by: Brooks at 5:43 am on Saturday, April 22, 2006

As of today, both of the remaining two spaces have been spoken for, and we must close regular registration. However, we’re still six months from the conference, and anything can happen — so if you think you might like to attend, simply register without paying, and send me an email to that effect.

Almost full up

Posted by: Brooks at 1:22 am on Monday, April 17, 2006

As of Easter Day, our reserved space at Asilomar is full except for two beds in four-person rooms, so if you want to attend, you’ll have to share a room with three other KAPers. Those that have done so in the past have found the idea exchange most valuable. I will leave open the option of off-grounds attendance for a few more days, but we’ve just about reached what seems to be the optimum number of people. So if you want to join us, now’s the time — the drawbridge is coming up.

If you don’t want to share a room or stay off-grounds, but wish to put your name on a waiting list, just send the registration form without payment, along with an email to me confirming your desires. If we have a cancellation, I’ll let you know.

On the subject of cancellations, until August 28, there will be no penalty. After that, forfeiture of some or all of your deposit will be necessary. My general rule of thumb is that if it costs me money for you to cancel, I will pass that cost on to you.

With the addition last week of James and Susan Aber, the roster stands at 41. We have a wonderful mix of new KAPers and experienced ones, scientists and artists, teachers and learners, from 14 states and eight countries. Should be a great conference!

First KAPiCA deadline draws near!

Posted by: Brooks at 4:02 pm on Saturday, April 15, 2006

Next week I must give Asilomar an estimate of attendance at KAPiCA/06, which will take place in Pacific Grove, CA, from October 29 to November 2. As I expected we would, we have just about reached our target number of participants with the addition of Mexico’s pre-eminent whale KAPer, Oscar Frey, who brings the roster to 39 participants.

Here’s the way it looks on April 14:

KAPiCA/06-list

If you’ve been procrastinating, now’s the time to get on board for what will be an invaluable gathering of KAP practitioners from all over the USA and nine other countries. My target of 40 is not hard and fast, but I don’t want it to grow much bigger, so if you want in, now’s the time.

KAPiCA/06 is filling fast!

Posted by: Brooks at 9:45 am on Tuesday, February 7, 2006

KAPiCA/06 is gathering steam. Today Cris Benton pushed us up to 19 participants, many with spouses, from six countries! That’s in just over 2 weeks of registration, much faster than either of the two preceding conferences. At this rate we’ll fill up by the first of March!

If you’re planning to come, might be a good idea to register now!
